Union County police arrested a man with a handgun in his car, who fired the weapon early Saturday morning.
At about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 19th, Jeffery Arana of Elizabeth NJ, 41 were found at Warinanco Park in his vehicle with a gun pointed at his head. Union County Police Officer Danny Fonesca was the first responder to the scene. According to a Union County official, Mr. Arana was yelling at police to leave him alone and was acting very erratically.
Officer Fonesca attempted to talk to the 41-year-old Elizabeth town man but was stopped when a single gunshot was fired shattering the driver’s side window. According to Union County officials, Officer Fonesca then bravely continued to speak with Mr. Arana, and no return shots were fired.
Union County Emergency Response Team was next on the scene with a negotiator to talk to Mr. Arana. After a three hour standoff, Mr. Arana agreed to surrender himself to Union County Police Officers. Previously it was falsely reported that Mr. Arana was arrested, but Officer Fonesca and other Elizabeth Township police officers merely detained Mr. Arana at the scene without any incident. Arana was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center per standard procedure. Union County officials have said the case is still under investigation.
